This Excel workbook calculates line-item costs and totals them by category on a summary sheet, so you can estimate and justify a small research budget.

What is inside

  • Budget sheet: category dropdown, item, unit cost, quantity, auto total, funding source, justification
  • Summary sheet with totals per category and grand total
  • Categories including statistical support and publication fees

How to use it

  1. Set your currency on the Summary sheet.
  2. List every cost you can foresee, even if funded elsewhere.
  3. Write a one-line justification for each item.
  4. Add a contingency line; funders usually expect one.

Example (illustrative)

A line: Statistical support | Consultation | 50.00 | 4 | total 200.00 (auto). (Illustrative amounts.)

Limitations and cautions

All amounts are placeholders for you to fill in. The workbook does not know your institution's overhead rules or your funder's eligible costs, so check both before submitting a budget. The file is free to use and edit, and the footer credits MedResearch Ninja.
