What Is ORCID?

Glossary entry · 1 min read · Last updated 2026-10-31

ORCID is a free, unique 16-digit identifier for an individual researcher. It lets you link your publications and other activities to you personally, which helps distinguish you from other people with similar names.

Example

Illustrative format only: https://orcid.org/0000-0000-0000-0000. Journals often ask for an ORCID iD at submission, and you can add the same iD to your CV and email signature.

Common misunderstanding

An ORCID record is not automatically complete or verified: you control what appears on it. It does not indicate quality or credentials. Keep it accurate by adding only works you authored.
